British Gas owned Hive is the top brand people spontaneously associate with the phrase ‘Smart Home Technology’ according to Impact's latest study* into consumer usage and opinions of smart home technology.
Hive’s line of smart thermostats are the result of a 3-year development programme, set in motion when British Gas acquired ‘AlertMe’, one of the early start-ups credited for developing connected home technologies.¹ Hive recently reached 1 million customers, and that looks likely to grow significantly over the coming years as smart technology adoption gathers pace.
Our study found that smart heating and smart lighting systems are some of the more popular smart home technologies likely to be owned by consumers in the UK with over one in ten (16%) owning either a smart heating or smart lighting system.
We also found that among non-owners of these technologies, interest in smart heating and smart lighting is very positive:
For smart heating and smart lighting brands to exploit this latent interest, explaining the reduction in energy bills due to more efficient usage is key (85% find this an appealing prospect). However, environmental gains and convenience factors are also important, with certain consumer groups placing more importance on these benefits than others.
